About the Veterans and the Arts Initiative

The Veterans and the Arts Initiative has served as an arts and community hub for more than 16,000 military-connected people since 2014. We offer free, hands-on workshops, art exhibitions featuring Veterans’ artwork, and concerts for our local Veterans, Servicemembers, and military family members (including military partners and kids). Explore our offerings in music, visual arts, and more to learn new skills and connect with community members!

Our team is committed to serving our Veteran community by:

  • Providing an arts and community hub for Veterans, Servicemembers, and their families

  • Offering support to Veterans as they transition to civilian communities

  • Conducting research on how the arts support Veterans and their families

  • Creating inclusive arts programming for diverse groups of Veterans, including those who have been underserved

  • Extending the national conversation on arts, health, and the military

“I have felt a renewed sense of pride and belonging during my participation in the Veterans and the Arts Initiative. Being an ‘odd duck,’ a woman officer serving in the Air Force in the 80’s, I did not serve with other women nor feel a part of any Veteran’s group after I left active duty […] until now. The Veterans and the Arts programs I’ve participated in at GMU include young and old Vets, past wars and present ones, Veterans, and their families. And I’ve found fellowship at last with other Veterans...Here we are able to share stories and experiences while we learn and express ourselves through the arts.”
