Northern Ireland company Cahoots NI has been creating distinctive and daring theatrical experiences for young audiences for nearly 25 years. On February 15, bring the entire family out to experience their current production: Secrets of Space. As the story unfolds, cousins Suni and Mae dream about journeying far beyond our solar system, high above the stars, and discovering the unknown. Using magical illusions and state-of-the-art digital media, Suni, Mae, and the audience embark on an interactive journey across the galaxy.
Inspired by the real-life contributions of women in space exploration, the production also encourages young girls to imagine themselves as future scientists, explorers, and astronauts boldly reaching for the stars.
“Getting to perform a story about space feels like I'm spotlighting my inner child,” said Kellee “Broadway” Fuller, who plays Mae. “One of my real-life heroes, astronaut Suni Williams, a lot like the character in Secrets of Space, is an absolute rockstar of the cosmos. She’s donated her hair in orbit, run a 4 1/2 hour marathon on a treadmill circling Earth, and even got stuck once, and still she goes back for more. I try my best to embody that fearless curiosity on the stage.”
Fuller’s co-star Philippa O'Hara, who plays Mae’s cousin Suni, has also found inspiration from women space explorers. “I have always admired Sally Ride, she was one of the first women in space and was the only Space Shuttle astronaut on the commission to investigate the Challenger disaster. Having read many books about the Space Shuttle program, I was always impressed by Sally’s bravery during these NASA years in particular. I am also a huge fan of Jocelyn Bell Burnell, a female physicist from my home country of Northern Ireland. She did not go into space but she was responsible for one of the most important discoveries in Astronomy—Radio pulsars."
