George Mason University’s Dewberry School of Music Jazz program is celebrating International Jazz Day (4/30), and you’re invited! The holiday was inaugurated in 2011 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) with the goal of highlighting jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe. Enjoy vibrant performances featuring George Mason University’s Jazz Ensemble, directed by Jim Carroll, and The Jazz Workshop, directed by John Kocur.

"Jazz is the sound of freedom, unity, and soul," Carroll said. "On International Jazz Day, we bring that spirit to life at the Hylton Performing Arts Center—where every note tells a story, and every rhythm brings us together."

Kocur adds: “International Jazz Day is celebrated each year through thousands of events in hundreds of countries around the world. Join us for a concert recognizing how jazz fosters global peace, unites us across boundaries, and builds mutual understanding.”
