The Veterans and the Arts Initiative offers diverse, intergenerational arts opportunities for the Veteran community each season. This August, try your hand at the tiny, musical marvel that is the ukulele in one of two free ukulele workshops (August 6 & 8 or August 27 & 29 ) for Veterans, Servicemembers, their families, and military caregivers.
Also, join us in the fall for the Dominion Energy Veterans Guitar Workshop Series. The Series is on Tuesday evenings from September 3 – November 5; Level I is from 7 – 7:45 p.m., and Level II is from 8 – 8:45 p.m. Instructor Glen McCarthy shares his guitar expertise in these fun, casual workshops that welcome musicians of all skill levels. Limited number of guitars are available for those who need to borrow them.
Saturday, September 28 marks the start of the weekly Songwriting Workshop Series for Military Kids that runs every Saturday through November 2 from 1 – 3 p.m. This 6-week series for kids and teenagers promotes songwriting in a collaborative, small group environment and is taught by faculty from George Mason University’s School of Music and the Mason Community Arts Academy. Students may bring melodies in-progress, or come seeking fresh ideas and creative ways to approach music composition. All students will have the opportunity to work in a professional recording studio, and perform their songs at the Celebrating Veterans and the Arts event on November 9. Free Arts Workshops for Adults 65 and Older for Research Purposes
Are you looking for fun opportunities to socialize in your community? The Hylton Performing Arts Center is part of a collaboration that has received a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant supporting a free 10-week arts engagement workshop series at the Hylton on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from September 3 to November 7.
If you are eligible, you will be randomly assigned to participate in one of these three opportunities:
- Social and Well-Being Workshops
- Ukulele/Guitar Workshops
- Ballroom Dance Workshops
Each session is 45 minutes in length. These workshops are designed to study how arts engagement benefits active adults 65 and older and improves overall health. Participants who complete the workshop series will receive vouchers for free Hylton Center tickets to select performances. Register now!
